StoryOrigin alternative: an honest comparison for reader magnets

· 6 min read

StoryOrigin is one of the best-loved tools in indie publishing, and for good reason. It is also often described as a free way to deliver a reader magnet, which is only half true. This guide explains what StoryOrigin does well, what its plans actually include, and when a simpler alternative makes more sense.

We make Storyfinch, so this is a comparison with a point of view. We have tried to be fair about StoryOrigin's strengths, because for plenty of authors it is the right choice.

Why authors look for a StoryOrigin alternative

Most authors who go looking fall into one of three groups. Some signed up for the free plan and found it does not collect email addresses. Some write in a genre where the swap marketplace is quiet, so they are paying for a network they rarely use. And some just want to hand out one free book and build a list, without a suite of tools to learn. If none of those describes you, StoryOrigin may well be the right tool already.

What StoryOrigin does well

StoryOrigin's heart is its community. Its newsletter swaps and group promotions let authors promote each other's books to their mailing lists, which can grow a list without spending on ads. In busy genres such as romance, fantasy and science fiction, that network is genuinely valuable.

Around it sits a broad set of tools: review copies with reviewer vetting and follow-up, beta-reader feedback, audiobook promo codes, universal book links, direct ebook sales, and reader-friendly download pages with device instructions. It connects to a long list of email services, including MailerLite, Mailchimp, Kit, EmailOctopus, Brevo and ActiveCampaign.

StoryOrigin pricing explained

These are StoryOrigin's own figures, checked on its pricing page in September 2026.

PlanPriceCollects emails?What it adds
BasicFreeNoFile delivery, reader tech support, universal links, email service integrations
Standard$10/month or $100/yearYesReader magnets and email collection, newsletter swaps, group promos, review copies, direct sales, audiobook promo codes

The row that matters is the first. StoryOrigin's free Basic plan delivers files, and is aimed at authors who already have an audience, but it does not collect reader email addresses. Reader magnets and email collection are part of Standard, so if list-building is the goal, the real entry price is $100 a year.

Storyfinch as a StoryOrigin alternative

Storyfinch does the core reader magnet job and deliberately little else: a hosted signup page for each book, delivery on private links that expire, a record of each reader's consent that you can export, and connections to ten email services. There is no swap marketplace, no group promotions and no review-copy tools.

The difference that matters most is the free plan. Storyfinch's free plan collects email addresses: one active reader magnet and 50 deliveries a month, with readers joining your list. Pro is a flat $29 a year for unlimited reader magnets, 2,000 deliveries a month, automatic sync to your email service and no Storyfinch credit.

When to stay with StoryOrigin

If newsletter swaps and group promos are how you grow, and your genre is active on StoryOrigin, stay. Storyfinch does not do cross-promotion and is not trying to. The same goes if you use its review-copy, audiobook or beta-reader tools: that is a lot of value for $100 a year.

When Storyfinch is the better fit

If you mainly want to give away one free book and build your list, Storyfinch does that on the free plan, and $29 a year covers you as you grow. It is also the better fit if you would rather not learn a suite of tools you will not use, or if you want exportable consent records built in from your first reader.

StoryOrigin's features and prices were checked against its own site in September 2026 and may change. "Not documented" means we could not find it in StoryOrigin's documentation, not that it definitely does not exist.

Can you use both?

Yes, and some authors do: StoryOrigin for swaps and group promos, and Storyfinch for their main reader magnet in their back matter and on their website. Both can feed the same email service, so readers end up in one list either way.

If you are also weighing up BookFunnel, our BookFunnel, StoryOrigin and Storyfinch comparison covers all three, and our roundup of reader magnet delivery services covers every option.

Frequently asked questions

Is StoryOrigin free?

StoryOrigin has a free Basic plan, but it does not collect reader email addresses. Reader magnets and email collection are part of the Standard plan at $10 a month or $100 a year.

How much does StoryOrigin cost?

The Standard plan is $10 a month or $100 a year. Extra pen names on a yearly plan are $50 a year each, and StoryOrigin also offers a paid guided setup.

What is the best free alternative to StoryOrigin?

If you want a free plan that collects email addresses, Storyfinch's free plan does that for one active reader magnet and 50 deliveries a month. If you want free file delivery without email collection, StoryOrigin's own Basic plan already does that.

Can I move my reader magnet from StoryOrigin to Storyfinch?

Yes. Upload the book file, set up your hosted signup page, connect your email service, and update the link in your back matter and profiles. Your existing subscribers stay in your email service.

Does Storyfinch do newsletter swaps?

No. Storyfinch focuses on delivering your reader magnet and building your list. For swaps and group promos, StoryOrigin is the better tool, and you can use it alongside Storyfinch.
