Prolific Works alternative: an honest comparison for reader magnets
· 5 min read
Prolific Works, which used to be called Instafreebie, is one of the older names in free-book giveaways. It works differently from most reader magnet tools, and understanding that difference is the key to deciding whether it suits you. This guide explains what it does well, what its plans include, and when an alternative makes more sense.
We make Storyfinch, so we have a point of view, but we have tried to be fair about where Prolific Works is the better choice.
What makes Prolific Works different
Most reader magnet tools only deliver your book to readers you send to them. Prolific Works also has its own reader-facing marketplace: readers browse and claim free books on the site and in its app, and it promotes giveaways through its own newsletter and recommendations. It also runs group giveaways with other authors, and private giveaways for review copies and beta readers.
That discovery side is its real selling point. If you want readers who have never heard of you to find your free book, Prolific Works offers something a plain delivery tool does not.
Prolific Works pricing explained
These are Prolific Works' own figures, checked on its plans page in September 2026.
| Plan | Price | Collects emails? | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Free | No | Unlimited giveaways, reader support, one pen name |
| Plus | $20/month or $200/year | Yes | Add subscribers to your mailing list, MailerLite or Mailchimp connection, giveaway tracking |
| Pro | $50/month or $500/year | Yes | Personalised giveaway branding, up to five pen names |
All plans can limit how many copies are claimed, set expiry dates and add optional DRM. The important row is the first: the free Basic plan gives books away but does not add readers to your mailing list. Building a list starts at $200 a year, and the automatic connection works with MailerLite and Mailchimp only.
The opt-in trade-off
There is one more thing to know. Prolific Works lets you make joining your list optional or required. Its own help pages say that giveaways where joining is required are not promoted through its social media, blog, newsletter or recommendations, and it recommends making it optional.
So on Prolific Works you are choosing between discovery and list-building: optional opt-in gets your book promoted, but fewer readers join your list. Which matters more depends on what the giveaway is for.
Storyfinch as a Prolific Works alternative
Storyfinch is a delivery and list-building tool, not a marketplace. It gives each book a hosted signup page, delivers it on private links that expire, keeps an exportable record of each reader's consent, and connects to ten email services (Mailchimp, MailerLite, Kit, EmailOctopus, Brevo, ActiveCampaign, SendFox, Beehiiv, Klaviyo and Flodesk), plus a webhook for anything else.

Its free plan collects email addresses, with one active reader magnet and 50 deliveries a month. Pro is $29 a year for unlimited reader magnets, 2,000 deliveries a month, automatic sync to your email service and no Storyfinch credit. You can make joining your list required or optional per book, and nothing is held back either way.
What Storyfinch does not do is bring you new readers: there is no marketplace, app or newsletter promoting your book. You send readers to your signup page, from your back matter, website, social posts or ads.
Which should you choose?
Choose Prolific Works if discovery is the goal: you want readers on its marketplace and in its newsletter to find your free book, and you are happy for joining your list to be optional.
Choose Storyfinch if list-building is the goal: you already have readers to send to a signup page, from your books, website or social media, and you want every one who agrees to land in your email service, starting on a free plan.

Frequently asked questions
Is Prolific Works the same as Instafreebie?
Yes. Instafreebie renamed itself Prolific Works in 2018. Some older guides and help pages still use the old name.
Is Prolific Works free?
Its Basic plan is free and lets you run giveaways, but it does not add readers to your mailing list. That needs the Plus plan, at $20 a month or $200 a year.
Which email services does Prolific Works connect to?
MailerLite and Mailchimp, on the Plus and Pro plans. You can also download subscribers as a spreadsheet.
Why won't Prolific Works promote my giveaway?
Prolific Works does not promote giveaways where joining your list is required. Making opt-in optional makes a giveaway eligible for its promotion, at the cost of fewer readers joining your list.
Can I use Prolific Works and Storyfinch together?
Yes. Some authors use a marketplace like Prolific Works for discovery and Storyfinch for the reader magnet in their back matter and on their website. Both can feed the same email service.
